Originally built as a fortification to protect the town of Saint Emilion, the 1er Grand Cru Classe estate of Clos Fourtet occupies a privileged hilltop position to the south-west of the town. The 20 hectares of vineyard are ideally perched atop the limestone cote that is key to some of St Emilion’s finest terroirs. Beneath the vines the rocks are riddled with ancient mines and quarries with tunnels leading from the cellars of Clos Fourtet to those of neighbour Chateau Canon and beyond.
