Bordeaux’s 2009 and 2010 vintage will likely ever be linked in the minds of wine drinkers – me included – in exactly the same way that 1989 and 1990 are seen as qualitative twins. However, these two pairs, separated by two decades, are almost mirror images of each other. 1990 and 2009 are the vintages of richness, opulence and decadent textures. 1989 and 2010, by contrast, are more classically structured, firmer of frame, brighter and more mineral in their fruit expression.
